SHARING WHAT WE LEARN: ACTION FOR SOCIAL CHANGE

We realize that we've been given a rare opportunity to conduct a large study of the health of trans people, and we don't take that for granted. We're committed to making sure that the information that comes out of this study is used to produce the greatest positive impact possible on the wellbeing of trans people. People in a wide range of roles can make use of our results.

  • trans people can take what we've learned to make better personal health decisions
  • trans people and their allies can make use of our data to advocate for funding for services
  • medical and professional schools can use the data to inform curriculum
  • researchers can expand on what we've done and create future projects
  • policy makers can use the this evidence as a basis for policy decisions
  • Reaching all of these groups of people requires a range of approaches. Below are some of the ways we make our results available in our Publications & Downloads page:

  • "plain-language" summary reports
  • community briefs on relevant issues affecting trans communities
  • media briefs and releases
  • short downloadable articles suitable for incorporating in newsletters, linking to via websites, or circulating via e-mail
  • downloadable tables and figures for presentations
  • downloadable series of slides that others can incorporate into their own presentations
  • presentations at trans community events and at academic conferences, (e.g. medical, social work, public health, psychology)
  • publications in peer-reviewed open-access health journals, with copies freely available on our website
  •

    • Peer-reviewed = a journal in which all articles submitted are reviewed by academic “peers,” such as other researchers who publish in the same journal. Peer-reviewed journals are considered the academic standard, and works published in them are regarded very highly.
    • Open-access = a journal where copyright is retained by the authors (us) instead of by the publisher. This means that no one needs a subscription to access published papers online, and there is no fee to read them. Moreover, this arrangement allows us to post our published work online for everyone to use, and to circulate it without any restrictions.

    BUILDING CAPACITY

We are committed in this project to strengthening trans communities through building capacities of:

  • trans community members to conduct health research
  • cisgendered (non-trans) health researchers and students to understand and address trans health issues
  • providers, advocates and policymakers to enact change to improve the health of trans communities
